Quick Tips: Building Your Survey
/Creating a survey is more complicated than most people realize. Here is a checklist to help you make your surveys the best they can be!
Know Your Goal
- Why are you doing this survey?
- What do you hope to learn more about?
- Who is your target audience?
- How will you use this data help improve your business/application/service?
Create Your List of Questions - Then Pare it Down
- Keep it short - make sure your survey can be completed in a reasonable amount of time
- Make sure that every question Is necessary - the longer the survey, the less likely people are to complete it.
- Make sure your survey follows a logical order.
- Only ask for information you really need.
Watch Your Wording
- Avoid leading and biased questions - you want to get clean data back.
- Be clear and direct.
- Be focused - ask one question at a time (watch out for "or" and "and" - they’re a warning sign!).
- Speak your respondent's language - use language and terminology that your respondents will understand.
- Strive for clear and precise language that will make your questions easy to answer. Vague or poorly worded questions confuse respondents and make your data less useful.
- Don't be afraid to show some personality and make it fun - just remember that humor is highly subjective.
End By Thanking Your Respondents
- A little appreciation goes a long way.
Test Drive your Survey
- Respect your respondents time and attention - catch errors and mistakes BEFORE you send your survey out. Ask at least five people to test your survey to help you catch and correct problems before you distribute.
- Make sure your survey works on a variety of devices - desktop, mobile, etc.
